Workplace culture, organisational culture, we have all at least heard about it. Many have worked on improving it, most have challenges with getting results. What exactly is culture and why is it so critical to get right? Your culture reflects your identity as a group. It highlights what is important to you, what the normal ways of doing things are, what you value and ultimately how you behave as a group. The problem is that culture will exist whether you work on it or not. For many workplaces/teams, the existing culture can be one of negativity, people lacking focus and drive for doing their best, as well as siloing resulting in splitting/blaming.

A big part of the challenge with changing culture, is that we are really needing to focus on intentionally creating a new identity as a group. When leaders try to work out what their people and communities need, clear values and purpose are the first stop (all very important parts of creating a great culture). Our leaders also need to know what is involved to then create the new identity that reflects these. This is where culture improvement falls short because often how our people are behaving is not inline with our values. It is bigger then behaviour though. Behaviour is driven by feelings and feelings, are driven by thoughts. So what we really need to focus on is how our people think and feel, this is the why behind the problem behaviour and attitudes. Interventions then need to look at changing this, which is closely related to what our people believe. Beliefs are at the core of people conflict. Beliefs are also at the core of creating unity. Complicated? Yes and no! It can be complicated and this is the reason why efforts to create change often come up short. The good news is that if we break it down, we can understand the drivers of people's reality, and herein lies the ability to create change - and unity. If you can lead your people to become united in their common purpose and then create the unity conditions to drive them forward in a solid unit, the possibilities become limitless in what you can achieve.
